"Golf requires talent and self discipline"
"Just easin' the tension baby"
The Chubbs is a spin-off of the SMGC. The Chubbs Peterson Shootout is a two day tournament that matches teams of 4 competitors against the field. The 1st day is played as a blind Best Ball. Day 2 is a 4-man scramble. The lowest scoring team following the 2nd day will be declared the winners.
February 2015 - Chubbs Peterson Shootout IV - The Chubbs IV was quite an adventure. Our usual trip to Pinehurst was in serious jeopardy after an ice/snow storm hit the sandhills area. We were able to call an audible and move the trip to Ocean Isle Beach at the last minute. The first day was a blind best ball at Carolina National. The team of Rob Schabinger, Jason Casterline, Will Stewart, and Matt Habicht jumped out to an early lead. The second round was played at River's Edge and was 4-man scramble. The leaders were unable to maintain their day 1 lead and barely hung on to second place. The team of Chris Boyd, Jeff Casterline, Jason Petty, and Luke Corbett went on a tear the 2nd day going double digits under par and running away from the field. After a dominating 2nd day performance, the crowned winners of the first ever 4 man Chubbs Peterson Shootout.
February 2014 - Chubbs Peterson Shootout III - In the third installment of the Chubbs Peterson Shootout, we made our way back to two old courses, Little River (which actually felt like we were playing in a river) and crowd favorite, Tobacco Road. The first day saw Jeff Casterline & Rob Schabinger jump out to an early with a solid 74. 5 teams were within 4 shots after the 1st day of action. The second day saw better course conditions and a friendlier Captain's Choice format. Tobacco Road was the venue. All the teams fared well, but Scott Butner and Trevor McDaniel had the low round of the day with a 1 over par 72. It was not enough to propel them past the pre-tournament favorites, Jamie Casterline and Steve Habicht, who went on to win by 1 shot with a two day total of 148. It was the first Chubbs win for either player. Trevor and Scott took 2nd place, while Jeff and Rob fell into a tie for 3rd place, only to lose on a tiebreaker to the surging Alan Vandiford and Brad Tomlin.
February 2013 - Chubbs Peterson Shootout II - The second edition of the Chubbs Peterson Shootout saw quite a few changes. There were 10 teams, the 1st day format was switched to Captain's Choice, and teams were randomly chosen from two flights just prior to tee off. It was cold and rainy, but that wasn't going to stop this group. We're used to this sort of weather at the Chubbs. Despite smashing into a guard rail on his way to the course, Jeff Thompson was able to make his tee time and along with partner Trevor McDaniel, took a 77 into the clubhouse for the 1st day lead. Jeff Casterline and Dan Merritt posted a 79 to secure a spot in the final group on Sunday. Would the winner come from that group? There were 3 other teams that were tied for 3rd just 3 shots out and the rest of the group was all within striking distance. The 2nd day went off without a hitch, despite most of the competitors rolling in a touch late to the course. The course also threw us for a loop by making us tee off from the 10th tee. The 2nd day also saw some nice weather and a lot of movement on the leaderboard. Scott Butner and Jason Casterline made a run from 6th place after the first day to secure a tie for 3rd with Jeff Thompson and Trevor McDaniel. Scott and Jason would win the tie break as the team of McDaniel/Thompson notched two double bogeys on the last 3 holes. Through the first 15 holes, it appeared no one would catch Brad Tomlin and Grey Davis as they strung together a couple of birdies and several pars to take a comfortable lead to the tee box at 16. The presence of the haunted Witch's forest and the "rape sheds" on 16 were too much for Brad and Grey to handle. They went on to go 6-over on the final 3 holes allowing Jason Petty and Kevin Templeton to make a run. Kevin and Jason stood on the 9th tee box needing only a bogey to secure a tie for first place. Petty would have a birdie putt to win it, a par putt to win it, and a bogey putt to tie it. He would miss all 3 leaving them one shot out of the lead and Brad and Grey would win the title. For the 2nd year in a row, the Chubbs was decided on the 18th green.
The History of the Chubbs Peterson Shootout
February 2012 - Chubbs Peterson Shootout I - The first year of the Chubbs Peterson Shootout was a success. There were 8 teams competing for the first title. The first day was played at Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines and the format was Best Ball. It was cold and really windy. The competitors battled through the elements and the team of Scott Butner and Dave Hedrick were in the lead with a solid 81. Only two shots out was the team of Matt Frazier and Trevor McDaniel with an 83. The remaining teams were all 5 or more shots behind and were going to need a low day 2 to catch up. Day 2 was played at The Legacy and the format was a 2-man Scramble. The teams teed off in reverse order of their 1st day score so the two top teams were going to head to head. The team of Jason and Jeff Casterline made an early run to get within a shot of the lead, but the defecit was too much to overcome and they settled for 3rd. The team of Chris Boyd and Brad Tomlin made an impressive run on Sunday as well, jumping from 7th to 4th. The championship was still in doubt on the green at 18. Dave and Scott secured the victory with a short putt, leaving Matt and Trevor with 2nd place. Each team won a little cash, but the real prize were the custom made plaques that Dave and Scott got to take home.
